Jeanette(Janet) Eleanor Glass Altschuler, May 24, 1905-September 1, 1984
Janet Eleanor Glass Altschuler was a very intelligent and talented musician. She knew at an early age that she wanted to seriously learn to play the piano. At the age of 14, her grandfather accompanied her to Steinway Hall in 1919 and bought her a Steinway Grand Piano to which she dedicated up to seven hours a day of practice, at times with the family’s Boston bull dog lying by the pedals.
Based on the Juilliard Bulletin when she passed, Janet enrolled in the Lower School of the Frank Damrosch Institute of Musical Arts. “In 1924 she received two diplomas, one from the Artist’s Course in Piano and the other from the Teacher’s Course in Piano in which she was accorded highest honors. Earlier, she had received the Institute’s designation as “the most promising music student of the year.”. She remained in Juilliard as a piano teacher and continued in what was first known as the Lower Preparatory Division of the Juilliard School of Music.
As a mother, she enriched her children’s, Isabel Allan and Nora Berman’s lives by instilling in them a love of the arts. They took lessons and practiced many years on her piano. Her granddaughter, Melissa Fine also took lessons and played on that piano for 10 years until college. Melissa Fine’s children are Madeline and Ryan Fine. The family was very honored to donate this piano to Building Bridges and to have it be regain its glorious tone and find some deserving student to play it and appreciate its worth.
